Course Description: Modern Band is modeled after the Little Kids Rock rock band curriculum. Students learn to perform, improvise and compose using the popular styles that they know and love including rock, pop, reggae, hip hop, R & B and other modern styles. Students in Modern Band classes will learn guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, vocals, technology, and computers. Students will participate in several informal performances throughout the school year.

Materials: You will need to have with you every day in class:

  • Modern Band folder/binder (I will give you a folder but if you would like to have your own 3-ring binder, that is fine too.)
  • Pencil
  • OPTIONAL: SmartPhone/Tablet for looking up songs and taking notes.

If you wish, you may bring guitar picks, drumsticks, and/or other accessories, but you are responsible for your own equipment. If you have your own guitar, you may bring it school, but you are responsible for your instrument while it is at school (you may store it in the band room, but you will need to provide a case if you want to keep it protected). If you bring your SmartPhone/Tablet to school, you are responsible for keeping it safe on your person or in your backpack.

Course Content: We will be learning a variety of songs ranging from pop, rock, country, folk, blues, and classical music genres. With each new song(s) we learn there will usually be a new set of skills that we will be learning.

Grading: Your grade is based on:

50% Participation

40% Assignments/Performances

10% Final Project/Performance

 Classroom Rules:

  1. Don’t be tardy (school rules apply).
  2. Show respect for people, their property, and the music.
  3. NO FOOD, GUM, OR DRINKS in the band room (water bottles are okay).
  4. Do not do anything that is annoying or obnoxious.

USE OF SCHOOL EQUIPMENT: All of the equipment in the band room (excluding your personal guitar if you bring it) is school property. You may not touch anything in the band room unless you have permission from Mr. McDonald. Equipment gets damaged without proper use, and if you damage any equipment (accidentally or on purpose) you will be responsible for repairing/replacing broken equipment. This class is a lot of fun if you follow the rules!

BCA Concert: Modern band performs at the Bonita Center for the Arts on January 16th, 2020! Make sure you set aside the date as attendance will count toward your grade!
